The event was attended by Heather Abrahams, who reported:

"The morning workshops.

(1) Ability to communicate with patients re-their condition and the desired pathway making sure they knew and understood their choices liaising with cares and family. G.P's still are not that adept at dealing with the human side of 'end of life' and Cosultants do sometimes give the patients and their families unrealistic beliefs.
(2) Real case scenario, how could it have been handled better. What lessons could be learnt each time you are faced with these decisions.

The discussions were very illuminating and I think very valuable to those taking part.

The afternoon workshops were to really understand the meaning of capacity, it can be a legal minefield. Several real cases were discussed and evaluated.

The day gave valuable insight to the problems encountered when dealing with a variety of end of life scenarios,  It was also a valuable exercise to have so many disciplines present, both primary and secondary care and the community services.

The 3 beds at Charlotte Straker will be of great value to the people of West Northumberland as up untill now no dedicated Palliative Care beds have been available. They are meant as short stay beds and will allow those people whose wish is to die at home to do so rather than spending their final hours in a hospital."
